Garage Door Track

Garage door tracks are the metal rails that guide the movement of a garage door as it opens and closes. They are typically made of steel and are mounted to the walls of the garage on either side of the door. The tracks guide the rollers on the garage door, which are attached to the door itself, as it moves up and down.

Normally Garage door tracks come in three different widths-1, 2 and 3 inches.

(1) 1 Inch – Common in truck & semi-trailer applications.

(2) 2 Inch – Common in residential and commercial applications.

(3) 3 Inch – Utilized in more industrial applications where the door is heavier. Also can be used in some residential situations where the door is much heavier.

Garage Door Track Lift Types

Normally garage doors have 3 common track lift types.

(1) Standard Lift – Commonly seen on most residential homes.

(2) High Lift – When the door needs to travel out of the opening before heading into the horizontal tracks.

(3) Vertical lift – Commonly found in commercial & industrial settings.

Garage Door Radius

Normally all residential garage doors have a track radius of either 12″ or 15″

A 12″ radius has a sharper track curve and opens lower

Anything shorter than 91 inches is a 12″ track radius

Anything between 91 & 93 inches is a 15″ track radius

If you are installing new tracks on a door, you can follow this general rule for selecting the horizontal track radius. For 12″ radius tracks you will need 12″ of headroom, the distance from the top of the door to the lowest part of the ceiling. For 15″ radius tracks you will need 15″ of headroom.
